Chapters Six - Eight Summary

In Chapter Six, Susannah asks her stepbrother Sleepy to drive her to the Beaumont mansion. She lies, telling him that she has a story to write, and that she has a return ride home. "Oh my God, I am such a liar. And I can't leave at just one lie, either. Oh, no. I have to pile it on. I am sick, I tell you. Sick" (p. 80).

Susannah meets Mr. Beaumont in Chapter Seven and delivers the dead woman's message. "She said for me to tell you," I went on, "that you did not kill her. She doesn't blame you. And she wants you to stop blaming yourself" (p. 93). After Mr. Beaumont's unusual reaction to her message, Susannah's mediator instincts tell her to get out of the mansion.
