Summary

Back in the present day, the teenagers turn their attention to Girtle. One of them, Laurette, asks Girtle questions about Jody and Mice. Girtle asks why they continually taunt Mice about her appearance and Laurette replies, “Because dummy. That’s what we see” (86). Mice climbs out of the light well. She tells the teenagers that she is no different to them. She jumps back into the light well The teenagers realize they are late for the party and hurry away. Girtle asks Mice to get out of the light well, pointing out that they are going to be late for the party. Mice refuses to come out and Girtle tells her she will see her at the party.
