Summary

Part I begins with a description of Jody Marrow, a 20 year old woman, walking down a street in Miami in 1961. This is followed by a description of Jody’s younger half-sister Mice. Although it initially appears as though the novel is written in the third person with an omniscient narrator, after an extensive description of Jody, Mice, and there movements on this day in 1961, it is revealed that the novel is being told in the first person from the perspective of an as yet unnamed narrator who is following both of the sisters and observing their every move. Mice climbs and jumps on different surfaces as she makes her way across the city, hiding and disappearing in unexpected places. The narrator reveals that they watch the sisters constantly, including when they are at home in their apartment. Mice was not supposed to go out...
