Nightshade

The realm of Nightshade represents the allure of the forbidden. The only realm the reader does not see in the book, Nightshade is fundamentally an enigma. Isla often fantasizes about running away there with Grim, who himself is a mysterious figure. Although Isla sometimes fears what will be in the realm, while in love with Grim she is enchanted with what could be found there.

Starstick

Isla’s starstick represents her aspiration for freedom. Taken from her mother’s old trove of magical tools, the starstick provides Isla with an ability to explore her guardians blocked. This gave her a desire to do more than live in a cramped bedroom and follow the obligation instilled in her by them. The fact that the starstick is Isla’s most precious belonging shows how important this aspiration is for her.
