The Smell of Strawberries

The smell of strawberries is a less significant symbol, but represents the genuine attraction that Freddy and Laura have for each other as well as Freddy’s sexuality. This symbol also represents how Freddy’s identity is wrapped up in Laura’s love for her. When Freddy introduces herself to the reader on page 3, she describes her age and likes saying, “I like the smell of strawberries, but not the taste. I’m a good kisser. I think” (3). Later on when Freddy describes to the Seek-her how she and Laura met, she talks about their romantic meet-cute, then the authors draw Laura leaning in and whispering to Freddy, “You smell like strawberries” (67). This therefore draws the connection between why Freddy loves the smell of strawberries, but not taste, and how significant her relationship with Laura is to her identity that she mentions it...
