Chapter 3 Summary

Jack is taken back to the chief's office in cuffs, and asked to go over the past 24 hours. He slowly repeats the details of his whereabouts, and the questioning begins. Baker and Finlay both question him now, trying to trip him, but Jack isn't lying so their plan is unsuccessful. He asks them to clarify why they are so certain about time of death, and Baker tells him that the body was wet from the rain, but the pavement under him was dry. They also let slip that the victim was kicked and viciously beaten after he was already dead. They ask Reacher again and again who the man. Then they tell him that the first shot killed the man, but what they can't fathom is why Reacher would then beat his dead body so ferociously. Jack slips into the mode without thinking...
