Margaret Moore

Margaret is the central character and narrator of the novel. Margaret is a teenage girl attending a naval summer camp. Margaret was once in love with Jack, a wealthy boy at the camp, who comes from a powerful family. Margaret and Jack had an intimate relationship during the previous summer.

Margaret does not remember a lot about her relationship with Jack. Her memory comes and goes, and Margaret does not always trust what she does remember. Margaret knows that she promised Jack that she would keep their relationship a secret. Margaret even keeps Jack’s name hidden in her internal monologue as though Margaret is keeping Jack a secret from herself.
