Summary

The novel I Am Margaret Moore uses only chapter titles. To facilitate the use of this study guide, the chapters have also been numbered.

Part I is titled Naiad. Chapter 1, “The Summer,” explains that the story is about ordinary girls who come together for Marshall Summer Naval School and that this is their last summer.

Chapter 2, “The Girls,” introduces Flor, Nisreen, Rose as they arrive. Margaret, the fourth girl is the narrator and is waiting for the girls to arrive because “everything depends on it” (10).

Chapter 3, “The Refuge,” explains that the Marshall Summer Naval School serves as a boarding school for boys during the regular school year. The girls start as “Butterflies” (11) at age nine, then move on to “Dragonflies” (11). Margaret and her friends comprise the Deck Five girls.
