Point of View

The novel is written in first-person from the limited perspective of a 14-year-old boy who is not named in the novel. The bullies at his school call him “Eyes” because he has a lazy eye, and his image of himself with the “disgusting” eye combined with the treatment of the bullies has an effect on his perspective. From Eyes' perspective, the lazy eye is the only reason he is bullied, which is likely a naive attitude considering the cruelty of the boys who torment him.

The limited perspective means the reader would not know what motivates the other characters except that Eyes has conversations with Kojima and a bully named Momose.
