Summary

In Chapter 4, Eyes notices that nothing feels real. He feels like a weight is pressing on his chest and sometimes has fever. Though he knows he could miss a few days of school, he knows that might make it worse when he does return. Mom says he can return if he feels “crummy.” He feels nothing has changed at school, and someone soon throws a juice box at him. Kojima never moves and he fantasizes about talking to her and about explaining to others why she has stains on her shirt. He imagines that they would understand the explanation and that Kojima would be happy. However, he knows that would never happen. He receives another letter and feels the tone has changed.
