Summary
Part I begins in the 1980s. The female narrator, who remains nameless at this point, meets Sam in a literature class. He asks her on a date and they go to a movie. Afterward, Sam invites her back to his place for a beer. He is staying at a house known as the Breach House, owned by one of their professors, who has allowed Sam, and his roommates Yash and Ivan, to rent his house while he is away for the semester. Sam and the narrator sit awkwardly on the couch. Yash arrives home and calls to Sam, asking him how the “daisy” is. Yash is embarrassed when he sees the narrator is there. They explain that they refer to the women they’re dating as Daisy, after Daisy Buchanan, the romantic obsession of Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald...
