Summary
Chapter 5, “Whipped Away,” describes Henry’s happy and somewhat impoverished childhood, as well as how much he changed when he developed TB. He lost so much of his energy. Far worse, he lost most of the many friends he had before. Most tragic of all, he lost his younger sister, who died quickly from the disease.
During the Ebola outbreak, Henry stopped taking his medications to avoid contracting TB at the hospital. His father took him to see faith healers. Though the faith healers could not cure his disease, they did make him feel that he was worth saving. However, this break in medication led him to develop multi-drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), and he was hospitalized a couple years later when he started getting sores on his body, not just his lungs. He was transferred from a local hospital to Lakka Government Hospital...
