Point of View

The novel is written in first-person from the limited perspective of Min, a 14-year-old girl who lives on the planet Jinju. Min seems to want to be an honest narrator but she does not always evaluate her actions as others would see them. She is often manipulative and impulsive, but she believes her actions are justified as long as they are driving her onward toward her goal. For example, she encounters her mother's cousin Nari by chance and rather than simply asking for help, Min pretends she is trying out a job in the hope of making it a long-term arrangement. She then tricks a customer into believing Nari will forgive a large gambling debt, prompting the customer to make an even more reckless bet.
