Summary

Chapter 6 is titled “Oderah and Arinze.” The opening page shows Oderah wearing an O'Dowd basketball uniform. She is standing beside her brother, Arinze, who is taller but also wearing a basketball uniform. In 1892, a physical education teacher named Sendra Berenson was trying to find a sport for the young women at Smith College. Berenson was sickly as a child when she and her family immigrated from Russia. She began exercising in an effort to combat that and that led her to physical education. She adapted basketball to suit the needs of women players while keeping with the demands of the scientific ideals of the time. She took that momentous step onto the gym floor.
