Summary

The Prologue opens with an image of Gene Yang, who is the author, narrator, and main character. The opening page of the Prologue depicts Gene as a tall, slender man wearing a button-down shirt and slacks. He wears glasses and has dark hair. The next page of the Prologue begins with Gene saying he has always hated sports, especially basketball. The next frames show Gene as a youngster playing basketball. When he becomes distracted, a teammate yells at him. As Gene walks away, he steps over the line that marks the edge of the basketball court. Instead of liking sports, Gene enjoyed books because he knew what to expect. He followed that interest and began writing and drawing comics. He took a teaching job at Bishop O'Dowd High School. He spent six years on his previous comic.
