Summary

A week after sending out her application, Emmy was excited as she prepared for her job interview with Mrs. Bird. With her best clothes on, Emmy headed out into the dreary weather toward the Launceston Press offices and arrived early. A large woman in feathery clothes ran out of the building and told Emmy to hurry along. This encounter jolted Emmy out of a reverie, and she decided to finally enter the building.

Inside, a receptionist told Emmy to head to the fifth floor for her interview. While waiting for the elevator, Emmy eavesdropped on a conversation between two middle-aged men discussing the war. Noticing her interest, one of the men asked for Emmy’s opinion. She responded by stating she trusts the prime minister’s judgement. The man she agreed with praised her smarts, and the other accused her of repeating something...
