Summary

In Chapter 18, “Maangchi and Me,” Zauner was troubled by dreams in which she discovered that her mother was alive, but ill and in need of help. She wished she could remember her mother as she was before she was ill. She and Peter moved to New York City and she got a job in advertising. She attended therapy, but found that cooking was actually more helpful for her mental health. She continued to consult Maangchi's YouTube channel for inspiration and decided to make her own kimchi (Korean fermented vegetables). She refers to making kimchi as “my new therapy” (216).

In Chapter 19, “Kimchi Fridge,” Zauner's father put the house in Eugene up for sale. Zauner felt strange looking at the realtors' photos of the house online and wondered if her mother's ghost haunted it. Zauner asked her father to send Chongmi's kimchi refrigerator to her...
