Summary

In Chapter 5, “Where's the Wine,” Zauner recalls her father telling her that her mother did not want her to return to Eugene while she was ill because she was afraid they would argue. She mentions that her father was a recovering drug addict who got into trouble when he was young, and describes her own experience with depression as a teenager. As she shunned her own mother, she gravitated towards a friend's mother. She also discovered indie music and began attending concerts. She began playing music herself and performed at her first show. Her friend Nick suggested she record an album at a local studio, but when she told her mother about it, Chongmi told her that if she wanted to live like a “starving musician” (62) she should move.
