James Herondale

James Herondale is the eldest son of famed Shadowhunters Will and Tessa Herondale and the older brother of Lucie Herondale. At the beginning of the book, James struggles with controlling his ability to enter a dark and chaotic shadow realm, which he later learns is the realm his grandfather, Belial, inhabits as a Prince of Hell. Yet, aside from this, James is described as an exceptional Shadowhunter and, perhaps more importantly, a leader of the young generation of Shadowhunters eager to prove to their parents that they have the skills and maturity to protect their city. James is a leader even among his friends, since the Merry Thieves -- Christopher, Thomas, and Matthew -- turn to him naturally.
