Mexico

Mexico is where Everardo's parents Lucia and Javier Chavez live. At the start of the novel, Turtle and Everardo travel to Mexico to see Everardo's parents. This is the first time Everardo has visited his family in ten years. Throughout the trip, Turtle learns about Everardo's childhood and past.

On their drive back to Oklahoma, however, the family is stopped by policemen on the border between Mexico and the States. When Everardo tells them he has no money to give them, they severely beat him. Turtle eventually gives them her per cap money so they will let her go.

Ever later travels to Mexico with Jimena to visit his grandparents, shortly before Jimena gets pregnant with Turtle Faith. Araceli also travels to Mexico to see her family after the Jimena's baby is born, as she wants her parents to meet the child before she dies.
