The Gnome Summary

A rich king has a apple tree which he has stated that anyone who eats an apple from it will be doomed to be a hundred fathoms under the ground. One day the king's three daughters are overcome with a desire to eat an apple and are transported underground. The king requests helpers to search for his daughters. Three brothers accept the challenge and set up headquarters in an abandoned castle. Each day one remains in the castle and two go out in search of the princesses. Every day a manikin stops at the castle and asks for a piece of bread which he drops and then asks for it back.
