Chapter 40 Summary

Jason gets into the highly classified Novgorod with the help of Krupkin. The place is immense, a collection of small cities with facades correct to the smallest detail of every country in the world where the Soviets might want to send operatives. Jason lands in the deep South section of the American sector and is amazed by the accuracy of the speech the Russian trainees have attained. They are perfect in their pronunciation depending on the area of the country they are from. Jason's contact inside Novgorod is an American educated young man, whose mother is in prison for espionage in California. Benjamin, as he is called inside the American sector of Novgorod, has the American speech and mannerisms down pat, but he is completely loyal to the Soviet ideology and antagonistic toward everything American .
