Chapter 38 Summary

Jason and Alex continue the shootout with Carlos. The persona of David Webb tries to emerge, thinking about the innocent people who might get hurt in the crossfire, but Jason suppresses that instinct. They are like "two aging lions stalking each other, not caring who gets killed" in the process. (Page 374) Carlos is wounded and heads for an exit. Jason follows knowing that Alex has alerted the KGB to guard the exits. However, Carlos manages to elude them by acting like an hysterical woman dressed in a wig and white robe he stole in one of the hotel rooms. The husband of the woman from whom he took the items is seriously wounded and Jason calls for medics to attend him.
