Boots

Boots symbolize the ways that Devon must pretend to be someone she is not. She must wear boots and make them sound clunky because that is what humans do. Book eaters do not need boots. Devon is trying to make herself something that she is not. She plays a similar role in other aspects of her life. For example, she pretends to be friends with Hester, and then she pretends to be working with Ramsey. Devon’s one goal in life is to protect her loved ones, and she does this even when it requires deception, and this is symbolized in part by the boots she wears.

Homeless Shelter

Devon drops the vicar off at a homeless shelter after Cai eats his brain, and this symbolizes the degree to which humanity disregards their most vulnerable. Devon knows that nobody will look much into the brain death...
