Point of View
The novel is told from the third person limited point of view. This point of view follows the life of the protagonist, Devon, from her time as a young child until she finally escapes to Ireland with her son and girlfriend.
Additional viewpoints are given through the introductory quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Many of these quotes are by real people, and as such, do not provide direct insight into the thoughts or feelings of the characters. There are, however, a couple of quotes from Killock’s journal. These are telling because they are the only real glimpse the reader gets into the minds of one of the antagonists, and there are a number of antagonists in the novel. Other of the quotes are from Mani’s book, illustrating what he has come to understand about the Families.
