Devon is the protagonist of the novel. Her main journey throughout the novel is to try to protect and reunite with the children she has lost and who she is about to lose. She is a book eater, and there are very few female book eaters. Because of this, she is treated as a princess, and she believes she lives a privileged life. When she comes of age, however, she realizes that her life is dominated by men. All she wants is to be with her children, and they will not allow her this.
