Chapter 16 Summary

Christopher discusses with Valerie that she needs to move somewhere smaller where she can have help, especially in light of her recent health scare. Christopher suggests they divide Valerie's home into three dwellings with three separate entrances. The largest apartment would be where he and the girls live when they are home from boarding school. The second would be for Valerie and the third for someone to take care of Valerie. Christopher admits that he asked Claudia to marry him, which shocks her slightly.

Claudia finds herself thinking more about Roger. She thinks it's because Jerome is gone and she is alone again. Claudia finds out that Christopher's youngest daughter, Rosie, was born with brain damage. Claudia says Roger will only have to serve half of his time if he behaves.
