Summary

“The Gender Reveal” by George M. Johnson follows third-person narrator Malcolm as he finishes sewing a suit he designed. He recalls an old sketch of a more feminine outfit that he wants to wear, but thinks he is not ready for. He asks Big Nanny to finish up the pants for his birthday outfit and meets his best friend Janet on the bus. Malcolm admits he is not ready to wear a dress or call himself nonbinary in front of his dad.

Meanwhile, Big Nanny finds the sketch of Malcolm in the dress and happily begins cutting his suit jacket.

After school, Malcolm worries his suit will be underwhelming, but Janet says he should focus more on if he wants to be a ‘him’ or a ‘they’. She promises to be by his side as she knows who he...
