The Bridge

The bridge is a symbol of mutability. Frances has an obsession with the bridge at Lyntons from the beginning of her time there. She hopes it will be a Palladian and she will become famous by writing an article about it. When she sees it, she is disappointed because she believes there is nothing special about it. Frances changes her mind when Peter looks at the bridge and says that he likes it. She even goes so far as to suggest that it is possibly Palladian in architecture.

After Cara kills Peter and then herself, Frances takes the sledgehammer and takes out her anger and grief on it.
