Summary

In Chapter 9, as Peter gave Frances a tour of the house, he pointed out that the open wall on the second floor of the gallery had been boarded up. They both wondered why that had been done. In the drawing-room, there was only a single mirror left. Even the fireplace had been ripped out. He pointed out the handpainted silk wallpaper decorated with peacocks. Frances noticed the eyes of all the peacocks had been cut out.

Peter ended the tour at the library where two walls were lined ceiling to floor with books. From the present, Frances wished she could have stopped time at that point both because she believed the library was beautiful the way it was and because she and Peter would not have to learn too much about each other.
