Aubrey Patterson
Aubrey is one of the two central protagonists of "In the Blink of God's Eye," and he begins the story as something of a belligerent skeptic within his own marriage. Aubrey was shuttled around as a child and was abandoned by his mother, who stepped out on Aubrey's father in order to begin living with a man down the street from the family. As a result of this, Aubrey is both reluctant to settle into his own marriage to Ruth because he fears its inevitable demise and is also deeply suspicious of his wife's actions, suspecting her of cheating with her coworker Earl. Eventually, Aubrey's inability to trust and invest leads him to alienate his wife, in part because he refuses to participate in raising the abandoned child that she finds in a tree outside their house. The slow deterioration of the marriage prompts Aubrey to grow...
