Book Three, Chapters 1-4 Summary

Van travels after leaving Manhattan. Marina is living in a villa on the French Rivera when Van goes to visit her. She never talks about Ada. She dies at a clinic in Nice in 1900. Ada and Demon come to Nice for the cremation.

Chapter Two has Van in Paris in 1901. He runs into an old friend, Grigoriy Akimovich. They talk and Van, now Professor Veen, changes the subject when Ada is mentioned. After saying goodbye to Grigoriy, Van meets Cordula unexpectantly. He learns she has ten children and tells her that he will give her the Manhattan apartment that he purchased from her years before. She tells him the same thing that Grigory told him—that Lucette is at the Hotel Alphonse Four.
