Book Two, Chapters 8-11 Summary

Van escorts Ada and Lucette around Manhattan. Both women are staying at his apartment. Ada, who is now twenty, likes to sleep late so Van usually showers before she is up. He finds Lucette sitting on Ada's bed when he comes out of the shower. Lucette leaves, as they find out from a note pinned to her pillow. They send a letter to Lucette's hotel and decide to ride through the park together.

Chapter Nine reveals that Ada wants to be an actress at the age of fourteen. Her career begins as her mother's ends in 1891. She and her mother both appear in Chekhov's Four Sisters.

Chapter Ten reveals that Van and Ada basically stay in hiding. They come and go separately and meet outside the apartment.
