Book I, Chapters 14-20 Summary

The family is having tea in the garden. Greg, the child of a family friend, returns Marina's platinum lighter and says he is going to a party. Lucette asks why Greg is Jewish and is told he is Jewish because his family is Jewish. They spend a few minutes discussing this.

In Chapter Fifteen, Van and Ada are climbing a tree in the garden when Van kisses her. By this time, there are both keeping diaries which they keep hidden.

Chapter Sixteen discusses Ada and Van's confusion at their first caresses. The caresses continue but they feel further apart. Van loves Ada and this adds to the confusion.

Chapter Seventeen reveals that their kissing phase lasts for about two weeks as they explore together. Once Van begins kissing Ada's hands, she stops biting her nails.
