Book Two, Chapters 5-7 Summary

During Van's fall 1892 term at Kingston University, he considers moving to Manhattan. He has recently purchased Cordula's apartment. Lucette visits him at Kingston bringing, as he had expected, another letter. They talk and Lucette tells of Ada's affairs. He invites Lucette to stay with him at his Manhattan apartment.

Ada's letter says that she wants to come live with him wherever he is. She has had a proposal of marriage.

Chapter Six has Van discussing some of the medical studies at Kingston. He discusses studies of acrophobia and other phobias. Van goes to his New York apartment. Ada arrives. This is the first time they have seen each other in four years. She has been spending time with Demon in the Western states where Demon has a number of affairs. She stays with Van.
