Car

The narrator's car is symbolic of freedom. When the narrator decides to take a drive at the novel's start, he feels liberated and autonomous. The car grants him the illusion of action and agency. Ultimately, it fails to deliver him from his psychological entrapment. Indeed, the freedom the car offers is rendered useless once it gets stuck on the forest road.

Forest Road

The forest road is symbolic of mistakes and regret. When the narrator starts driving down the narrow road, he fails to consider how he will turn around. Once he gets stuck on the road, he does nothing to extricate himself from his situation. The road represents life mistakes, and the ways in which such missteps might immobilize the individual. Indeed, the narrator does not learn from and try to correct his ill-advised decision. Rather, he allows his regret to consume him.
