Summary

The narrator decided to take a drive. He “didn’t know where [he] was going,” but just kept driving (9). He was feeling bored and had nothing else to do. Driving occupied his time. He took left and right turns off the main road at random. Eventually, he reached “a forest road where the ruts” grew deeper and deeper (9). When he could no longer drive forward or backward, he stopped the car.

He sat in the car feeling bored, empty, and anxious. He could not explain the feeling. He stared at the forest in front of him. He wanted to drive further, but could not. He studied the pine trees and soil. He was still feeling uneasy. He could not explain his emotions, but they felt real. He tried to remember if he had seen a place to turn around.
