Summary

The narrator noticed that the forest road was covered in snow, too. He could not really tell “where the path was,” but he headed into the forest anyway (21). He told himself “to keep walking” until he found “a house where someone lived” (21). If he found someone, he could get the car out and drive back to town. He guessed he would have to reverse all the way back down the forest road (21). Then he remembered passing a cabin. He could reverse to the cabin, then turn around there. Hopefully, he would find someone soon.

The narrator realized he might not be able to find anyone as the woods grew darker. He chastised himself for taking the drive. He had never made such a bad decision and had never been in “a forest in late autumn” at night before (23).
