Summary

In Chapter 4, Sweetbriar has become a hospital for the wounded and Veronica spends much of her time helping the nurses care for them. Veronica struggles with wearing her heavy wedding ring and often chooses not to wear it. Veronica meets Valery Chirac, a French soldier who broke both his legs and is not expected to survive, and brings him brandy. A couple nights later, Chirac asks for Veronica to help him write a letter to his family because she spoke a few words of French to him. As she is helping him, she discovers his mother, and the rest of his family, was taken to the Drancy concentration camp. She wishes she could save Chirac. The next night, Oona will not be quiet or go to bed. She leads Veronica to Chirac’s bed, where he is suffering from...
