Summary

The Book of Veronica opens in 1937 with Veronica, the daughter of Morwen and Dafydd, being presented to the king and queen of England. The occasion is unpleasant for Veronica, who wishes she was back at Sweetbriar, her family’s estate, riding her horse or conferring with farm managers. She agreed to be formally presented because her father, Dafydd, asked her to on behalf of her grandfather and the family’s reputation. Much of England is worried about a war with Germany and Veronica’s sweetheart, Phillip, predicts England will go to war. Veronica worries that her brother Thomas will also be sent. A Nazi officer has showed up at the event and salutes the king and queen with a Nazi salute. After Veronica curtsies to Queen Elizabeth and King George and sees the Nazi salute, she has a troubling...
