Summary
Part III describes the rescue of Maurice and Maralyn and its aftermath. Chapter 1 is told from the perspective of Suh Chong-il, the captain of a Korean vessel called the Wolmi. Their expedition had been a failure, including significant storm damage and the death of one of the crew. They had been at sea for two and a half years. On the morning of the 30th of June, 1973, a crew member knocked on Suh’s door to tell him he had seen something in the water. Suh came to have a look and ordered his men to steer the ship closer so they could investigate. Once they were nearer, they discovered two extremely emaciated people stranded on a life raft.
