Summary

Part I, Chapter 1 details the events of March 4th, 1973. Married British couple Maralyn and Maurice Bailey were onboard their yacht when the hull was breached by the death throes of a whale. They desperately attempted to mend the hole but were unsuccessful and realized with horror that they were going to have to abandon ship. They packed what supplies they could fit in the emergency dinghy and life raft and abandoned ship. Sitting in the life raft, they watched their yacht sink, leaving them stranded alone in the Pacific ocean.
