Summary

Part II covers the events that occurred after Maurice and Maralyn were stranded in the Pacific. In Chapter 1, Maralyn arranged their remaining possessions on the life raft, finding that having something to do was a necessary part of coping with the dire nature of their situation. The life raft was four feet six inches in diameter and too small for both of them to lie down in at once. After Auralyn sank, other items floated to the service and they salvaged what they could, storing things in a separate dinghy which they attached to the life raft. As they worked, Maurice looked across at Maralyn and saw that she was crying.

Maurice blamed himself for the shipwreck and obsessively went over details in his head, imagining what he could have done differently to prevent it happening. Thinking of an explanation distracted them...
