Objective

In chapter one when Ashley first sees the figurine that Blakely shows her, she is able to guess that it is some sort of fertility icon by the appearance of the diamond figure.

The objective of this lesson is to examine icons.

Lesson

1) Discussion: Have the class discuss what an icon is. In what ways are icons seen every day? What other things have been seen in chapter one that you could call an icon? Explain.

2) Classwork: Give the students a list of objects, places, things, people or other. Have the students pick one of them and write out a scenario in which it could be used as an icon or in which it is used as an icon. This can be real or fiction.
