· Chapter 1: "Nanas I Have Loved" opens by saying Anita Moody is not a welcoming, loving grandmother to her grandson, Jared, whom she treats suspiciously, coldly, and calls a "trickster" (1).
· Nana Anita is a loving grandmother to her other grandchildren, performing a more stereotypical grandmotherly role, including making them mittens and baking for them.
· For Jared's last birthday, however, she gifts him a jar of animal blood and teeth.
