Front Matter and “The Feminist”

· Following a dedication, table of contents, and epigraph, “The Feminist” begins with a comment about the focal character’s high school education.
· The focal character’s romantic difficulties are attested, and he muses on labels and expressions of values.
· College proves no more conducive to the focal character’s romantic endeavors than had high school, and the focal character reflects on the distinctions between friendship and romance.
· An instance of romantic rejection is presented, and the focal character reflects on it in the following days, working through his feelings awkwardly.
· Similar incidents follow and are glossed: “This exact scenario happens four or five more times, with different women” (4).
