Lesson 1 (from Prologue)

Objective

The students will understand the historical setting of Niccolo Machiavelli's book, THE PRINCE.

Lesson

1. The teacher will introduce the historical aspects of Niccolo Machiavelli and some of the controversy that surrounds him.

2. The teacher will lead a discussion of the Italian Renaissance (14th to end of the 15th Centuries), stressing the need to understand THE PRINCE in terms of those times.

3. In class the students will read aloud the Notes and Dedication of THE PRINCE.

Homework:

Go to the library or check the internet for information about Niccolo Machiavelli and be prepared to discuss what you learn in class.

Also look up information about the Medici family and their place in Italian history.

Lesson 2 (from Prologue)

Objective

The students will discuss the Italian Renaissance in depth noting some of the important people of that time (e.g., Petrarch, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo da Vinci).
