1. What is the narrative point of view in the novel?

Piecing Me Together is narrated by Jade Butler, the novel's protagonist, who is living with her mother and her uncle, E.J, in Northern Portland, Oregon. As a Black teenager at a predominantly white, elite private school, Jade finds it difficult to connect with some of her classmates but is passionate about Spanish and going abroad to become fluent in it. Jade's first person, intimate perspective shows reality through her own eyes, showcasing the challenges and triumphs of a Black teenager navigating her home city and world.

2. How does the structure of the novel help readers understand Jade's characterization?

The novel is broken into 76 chapters, each narrated through Jade's point of view. Each chapter is labeled with a number and titled in Spanish, with an English translation beneath the Spanish word. This Spanish-English titling of the chapters shows two important parts of Jade's characterization; that is, she is learning Spanish as a way to leave her home city of Portland and pursue her dreams, yet also living in the present with her friends and family through the English language.
