Gene has hated sports ever since he was a little kid. He has especially hated basketball. Games would begin okay, but then he would get distracted. He would get hurt, and his teammates would yell at him. He usually ended up getting kicked off teams.

2. What did Gene start doing after he finished college?

After Gene graduated from college, he began writing and drawing graphic novels. He wanted to tell stories. At about the same time, he also became a high school teacher and started teaching at Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, California.

3. In the Prologue, what does Gene share about his last graphic novel and starting a new one?

Gene says that his last graphic novel was published in 2013. It took him six years to finish with teaching and family obligations. By the fall of 2014, he still did not have an idea for a new story. He worried that he did not have any stories left to write about. He started hearing about the basketball team, and he became intrigued.
