Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1: The Colour of Magic Prologue)

Objective

The story begins with the Krullian astrozoologists trying to establish scientific proof for what has been, the reader can assume, a faith-based assumption--namely, that Discworld rests upon four elephants that are supported by the back of the great turtle. The astrozoologists are able to scientifically prove the existence of the great turtle, but not its gender. It is the quest for further scientific proof of the great turtle's purpose that forms the basis for the beginning of the story. The astrozoologists and their quest for scientific proof is not a new concept. Over and over in today's world, people seek scientific proof to verify their beliefs.

The object of this lesson is to examine how scientific proof either confirms or denies our beliefs and the consequences realized when such proof simply does not exist.
